Proteinuria is a important and independent risk factor for the progression of renal diseases. Proteins are nephrotoxic. The mechanism of proteinuria and processes activated by proteinuria are described. Reduction of proteinuria slows or prevents the dammaging events. The pharmacological and nonpharmacological control of hypertension, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition, restriction of protein in food, can delay and reduce the progression of renal failure. The screening of proteinuria in all children and adolescents is recommended.
